Nobody Expects So You Go Shock The World! Lessons From Emma & Leylah

This is one of those where it was not in the plans, but it had to happen… Did you not watch this epic match!

Two young Phenoms who just happened to be tennis players going head-to-head in the women’s US OPEN final and shocking the world, I could not get enough of this match.

So this is all about giving these two young ladies their flowers but also what we can learn from this, as these are for sure both champions, with a bright future ahead of them if they stay on this path.

Leylah

Born on the 6/02/02 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Leylah Annie Fernandez is a pro tennis player who is of Filipino & Ecuadorian descent.

Leylah is currently in the top 50 tennis players in the world (At the time of doing this), she plays left-handed/Two-handed backhand and loves to play smart curved shots, slices with her racket.

Even though she is not very tall, it does not hold her back, as she can switch to offence to defence with ease…
At this time though I would say she prefers offence.

She has mad accuracy in her ground strokes, her forehand is amazing, amazing backhand, with just her volley shots and serve needing more work.

This US OPEN in 2021 was her first grand slam, but she has featured in the other slams (Australian, French & Wimbledon) getting to the 3 round in the AO, 3 round in the FO & 1 round of Wimbledon.

Emma Raducanu

Born on 13/11/02 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Emma Raducanu is a pro tennis player who is British, with Chinese & Romanian descent.

Emma is currently in the top 50 tennis players in the world (At the time of doing this), She is right-handed/two-handed backhand and is an all-rounder who can play a variety of shots, even in tight and tough spots with her racket.

She is a very aggressive player and has sharp and quick movements, her forehand is very accurate, she has so much power in her shots too, currently she clocks up to 125 miles/hr, and it can only get faster as  she  matures into a grown woman.

Her variation of where she places her shots and her vision of where to go and when to move for the next shot to take control of a game is scary! If you face Emma you have to be at your best or get left with an L.

Lessons From Leylah

Below is some lessons that I took from Leylah in the US Open final & even before then.

Face The Higher Ranks

I mean she really had no choice in this, as of course you must play who you are told to play butttt, it’s the way in which she played which I loved so much.

In the build up to the final, her road was a lot harder than Emma’s… She played four of the top 5 in the world!

She not only held her own against them, she beat them, I never heard her moan or complain about facing any one of them, or speaking negative about it, she believed in herself and her play showed that throughout the open.

Her mindset never broke when it came to facing these top 5, she never showed that she was beneath them just because of status or the number on the WTA rankings.

If you want to go for the win in life, you have to face higher ranks at some point, Leylah has shown if you prepare right, and you believe in yourself, why wait?  Bring them now and beat them!

Leylah Never Die Attitude

This is my fav thing about Leylah as a player she never quite knows when she is beat!

It’s like she does not see it, and she manifest wins like it’s nothing, for instance her matches against the top 5 according to the WTA, she lost a set in each 3 out of 4 of those matches…

Her will power, and her mind never went to doom and gloom, she kept going, countless times I’ve seen her on the brink of defeat or to be less dramatic to lose the game in the set etc and then pull out the win from like 1 game in the set when the other woman is 5 up on her or 4 up, it’s crazy.

It reminds me that this is why you keep going with the things that you want, if you quit just because the score board says it’s not looking good, then you miss out on what you can really do for yourself, like making comeback and turning things around in your life.

For you Di1’s your health goals may not be going as you wished, take the lesson from Leylah & have a never die attitude, she’s like the Pinya John Cena all she needs is an orange cap!

Family Support

Her family and team went in!

I know this directly does not have anything to do with her, as it is her family… I just had to give them a S/O as the support they gave to her was unreal.

They pushed her in that final, her sister was playing no gamessss on that court, letting everyone know what’s up and backing her sis, you got to love it.

Her mother and the rest of the family too, invested so much energy to push her, even when she was getting beat and it look like the end, then she made her comeback, their energy never lowered once.

I look at this and think, damn never settle!

If you find ones that support you like this, family or not… keep them with you.

Being You Works Best

Before this whole final thing, she adopted the mentality that Roger Federer calm approach would make her
play better tennis, I can tell you it did not work out very well for her.

So she chooses to do what is more natural to her, which is to pump up the crowed, and then they pump her up, then she pumps herself up all at the same time!

When she copied and try to be Roger mentally, it did not work.

It’s not that what Roger does is no good, he’s a legend of the sport, but it does work for who he is as a person.

We, too, can learn to stop trying to copy others, and do and be who we are and what is natural to us, better results will come this way in everything that you do.

Lessons From Emma

Below is some lessons that I took from Emma in the US Open final & even before then.

Sooner Than You Know

From the first lockdown in the UK to the studying for exams, in those moments I’m sure Emma did not think
that in 2021 all of this would have happened to her.

The point is she was not meant to, she knew long term what she wanted, but was willing to go many more years to get to that point.

When everywhere was shut, where was Emma? She was working on her game, lit on the streets outside her home!

This is no fluke, Emma has worked hard for this!

When the world did not know her name, when the ones that did not think she would mount to anything, when that teacher told her to stop thinking about being a tennis player, when others were fooling around mindlessly, Emma was working.

The universe knew she was ready, God said you can have it now & she shocked the world.

The lesson is clear, you never really know when it’s coming, but be ready and do the work, because sooner than you think it can come.

Change is going on as you read this, nothing stays the same on this earth… Never count yourself out, count yourself in & focus on you…

What is meant to be will be, if only you will stick the course.

There Is Nothing Wrong With Dominating

It’s a sport, it’s meant to be fun & in a sport other  than playing for fun, you should be playing to win.

I don’t see anything wrong with crushing the other person, it’s you or them at the end of the day.

I know Emma has no issue with this, especially as she won every set of her US OPEN matches.

We can all learn to attack life like this, against yourself, beat the you of the past.

If it comes down to you and the other person in a comp, play to win.

Mainly it will be you vs you, and to be honest that is all there really is…

So when you do face off against another, like these two did the winner was already decided
from all the work they put in before they met, and the build up to the final.

To get this far, at this level & to win how she won without losing a set, that’s not by accident…

I know the press like to turn things into a Disney story, but the truth is she worked damn hard for this.

That hard work and dedication, lead her to being able to have the skills to dominate, the mental strength
to overcome the never die attitude that Leylah has wired deep inside herself.

Like a wise young  man once said This is not by mistake this is by design-Russ

That Cut Knee

Before this incident it did look like Emma was going to lose this game, as Leylah had picked up some steam.

However just as Leylah was peppering her shots, Emma glided across the court to return a ball & cut her lower knee in the process.

It was bleeding & when you’re bleeding like that, you must be treated, as both of them wanted to just carry on.

They cleaned her up, it took a while for her to be patched up too, there was a complaint in the heat of the moment from  Leylah which she has since said she was wrong for, making it known to the umpire what she felt was unfair at the time.

All of which Emma could hear, that along with the time takes a lot of mental strength to gather your own thoughts and to shut it off  and then what’s going on around you, and then speak that positive energy back into you, all the while being in pain as the your knee is being treated, It stung her like a bihhhhhhhhhhhhh (Did you see her face lol)

Point being she kept it 100 and played out the match and won via an ace on her serve, if you can keep your head in a storm big or small you can still win.

Just Be In The Moment!

This is my fav one from Emma, so she just wins and lifts the cup, she then gets all dolled up with the help of her team…

Then does press, what struck out to me in her interview is when she was asked about her future and then she said the following.

“Right now I’ve absolutely no care in the world”.

“I’m just loving life, I’m just really trying to embrace the moment and take it all in”.

“I think it’s definitely time to switch off from any future thoughts or from any schedule. I’ve got absolutely no clue”.

If you can do this often just think of the space you will have & the stress you will not have in your life.

 THAT’S IT!

I really enjoyed sharing this with you guys. Please do let me know though…
