You’ve more than likely got a stockpile of spices in your house, to put that extra spice into your meals.
What I think is not really said is that it does a lot more than that!
It also helps prevent food from going off too.
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory can be found in many of them, such as… Cinnamon, sage, turmeric and cloves etc.
It’s well known that it can help with respiratory diseases (Not COVID-19).
A lot of you keep asking me, well, how long do I have before I must throw it away?
So , I’m really going to be speaking about how long and when to throw it away.
How Long Do They Last For?
Well that all depends on how it was processed.
Dried herbs will not last as long as dried spices.
So let’s take mint, sage and rosemary now, these are all dried herbs and last up to one to three years.
Powered spices last for around two to three years, give or take.
Think chili powder, ground turmeric and garlic powder.
Now whole spices have the longest shelf life of them all, this is because a lack of moisture, light and air has been exposed to it.
If stored i the right way, it can last up to four years!
Glass jars with airtight lids are your best bet! You can keep them in your cupboards too, just make sure it’s away from light, heat and the area is clean that you store it in.
What are some whole spices?
Spices such as mustard seeds, cumin seeds & coriander.
When Is It Time To Throw It Away?
To be honest, spices and herbs do not really go bad, how you’d think.
Let’s just say that it do though, all it means is it loses its flavour, aroma and colour.
In which case, why would you waste your time eating it?
It’s not because it can make you sick, like other foods.
So if you want to check, as you feel suspect that it may be off…
Always check the scent of it and the flavour, you can even rub it in your hand and if it’s a weak scent, it means it’s off & will taste dead in your mouth.
THAT’S IT!
I really enjoyed sharing this with you guys.
Please do let me know though…
