My Di1’s know that I’m a huge fan of Yoghurt and I tend to try to throw it in when I can, but who can blame me..
It’s a fermented dairy product that’s popular worldwide!
In more recent times Greek yoghurt has been encouraged to be eaten by The Healthy One & other health experts.
Both regular & Greek yoghurts are filled with quality nutrients that are good for us.
So if we can really eat them both, then what really sets them apart?/ which one is better for me ?
I’ll explain it all below..
Ok both regular & Greek yoghurt are fermented dairy products, you know like Kefir & sour cream.
The fermented dairy products are made by converting all the lactose milk into natural occurring sugar, into the lactic acid via using certain bacteria..
AKA “Starter cultures”
Both yoghurts are made with the same ingredients.. Fresh milk, Bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus ect as starter cultures.
What you’ll notice though if you have ever tasted both though is that the nutrients and the taste differ & that boils down to how they’re made.
Regular yoghurt is made by adding bacteria to heated milk and leaving it to ferment, after it cools down other ingredients are thrown in like fruits and berries.
When it is complete it’s very smooth and will vary in it’s thickness, depending on what you’ve put in it.
Then it’s ready to be eaten or drunken, it’s very acidic so if the yoghurt is plain it can taste a little bit sour.
Overall it’s a lot sweeter in taste than Greek yoghurt ever is.
Greek yoghurt is made by eliminating Whey and other liquids from regular yoghurt.. you may know Greek yoghurt by another name like concentrated or strained yoghurt.
The straining process lowers the total volume, so Greek yoghurt needs a lot more milk put in it than regular yoghurt if you want to make an even batch of the same size for yourself.
The texture is made by putting it in a Centrifuge which spins the yoghurt around.
You should also know that most of the liquid from Greek yoghurt is removed, this is why it’s much thicker and has a tangier taste to it compared to regular yoghurt.
Also it will cost you more and the reason is that it taste much more milk to make it.
Di Nutritional Comparison
As you can see up top the Di Nutritional Comparison numbers are up!
Greek yoghurt has a little less carbs in it and more good fat in it then regular yoghurt.
Regluar yoghurt has less sodium but not by much in this comparison & it’s not on there but the sugar of regular yoghurt is higher
than the Greek yoghurt too.
How could I forget the protein.. Greek yoghurt really wipes the floor with regular yoghurt.
How Can They Both Work In My Favour?
They both share similar health benefits which is a good thing in my book!
Probiotics are the healthy bacteria found in fermented foods like yoghurt of course, they also both help reduce your risk of inflammation and other illnesses.
They’re good for the heart & great for lowing high blood pressure and cholesterol.
They’re great too for losing weight rather than going for such trash like Candy or Chocolate.
The protein in both leads to us feeling fuller for much longer, which also lowers are calorie intake.
Both regular & Greek yoghurt are an excellent snack choice and you should not choose out of the two.. you should just eat both!
However, sweetened yoghurts are packed with added sugar.
Yoghurts that are filled with a high intake of sugar will make you gain weight, mess up your teeth & put you at a higher risk of getting
type 2 diabetes among other problems.
My advice to you is always pick plain yoghurts as you’ll know for sure no added sugar was put into it, then if you want to add a lil fruit or whatever else that is healthy to give the yoghurt some kick
then be my guest..
You just cannot trust the supermarket bought items, that what they say they put in it has not got some crap that is going to make you unhealthy..
This way you have more ownership in what you put inside of your mouth.
If you’re looking to add more protein to your lifestyle then Greek yoghurt is better for you, and I would encourage those that do not eat meat to get on this Greek yoghurt ASAP!
I really enjoyed sharing this with you guys. Please do let me know though…
