The 5 Foods To Buy & Not To Buy In Bulk

Buying food in bulk when shopping is a great way to fill up your kitchen while cutting down on the foods costs.

While some foods make ideal choices due to a very long shelf life/ability to freeze, others should not be bought in bulk at all to stop spoilage.

Here are five healthy foods to buy in bulk and five healthy foods to not buy in bulk.

Frozen Vegetables

Fresh Vegetables tend to spoil very fast, even if you’ve stored them correctly.

Instead, stock up on frozen vegetables such as Butternut squash, Broccoli and Spinach, as these types of vegetables can be stored in a freezer for over six months without spoiling.

Vegetables are packed with nutrients, which is why eating Vegetables both fresh and frozen have many different health benefits.

If your intake of Vegetables is higher, your chances of getting chronic conditions such as Diabetes and Heart disease is much lower than those who have a low/zero intake of Vegetables.

Here are some more reasons why you should eat Vegetables more often (Click Here)

Frozen Poultry & Meat

Fresh meat and Poultry tend to spoil quickly when you store it in the fridge, so freezing it is an excellent way to avoid having to throw your Poultry and Meat away.

Speaking to several farmers, it is agreed that frozen Meat like Steak can last in the freezer for up to a year, whilst Chicken breast can last up to nine months.

When you freeze Protein sources straight away after purchase, it extends the usability so that you do not have to keep going back to the shops as often to get your Poultry or Meat.

Dried Beans and Lentils

One of the best foods you can buy in bulk is dried beans and Lentils.

In fact you’ll find they can be stored at room temperature for an extended period of time before going off.

So no need to store these in the freezer! Store them on your shelves in the kitchen.

It’s been proven that beans remain edible for 10 years plus too.

Beans and Lentils are very high in Fibre, Antioxidants and Vitamins & Minerals, making them a top bulk shopping item to get your hands on.

They can also be added to a Variety of different meals, for example Salads, Stews, Soups etc.

Oats

Oats have a very long shelf life.

You can keep them for up to four months in your cupboards.

If you freeze the oats in an airtight container it will further extend its shelf life, which would give it another 4 months to the expire date.

Oats have high amounts of B vitamins, Zinc & Magnesium in it.

Peanut Butter

Buying Peanut butter in large jars is easy for most people because it cost very little and is easy to store.

Peanut butter is an excellent source of plant-based Protein with lots of healthy fats and vitamins.. along with minerals that are all great for us to consume.

Of course Natural Peanut butter is a much healthier option than processed brands that normal contain added sugar and hydrogenated oils in them.

If you have an unopened jar of natural Peanut butter in your fridge to keep for one year, on opening it your Peanut butter will last up to three or four months if left in the fridge.

Here are the five foods to not buy in bulk…

Fresh Fruit & Vegetables

While there are exceptions, many fresh Fruits and Vegetables such as courgettes, Berries and Greens have a shelf life of less than a week before they start to go off.

From now on when buying fresh fruits and Vegetables, only buy what you know you’ll consume within a week to avoid food waste.

Eggs

Eggs always seem to be sold in bulk for a discount price.

If you have a big family then I can see the appeal of doing this every week.

However, if you live alone or just with 2 other people in your household it’s very unlikely you’ll be able to finish dozens of eggs before their expiration date which is anywhere between three to five weeks.

Prepared Food

Don’t be tempted to buy your favorite prepared meals that are on sale in bulk, unless you actually plan on eating them fast.

Dishes such as Chicken, Salad, Egg and cooked pasta only last few days in the fridge before going off.

Eating prepared foods past their expiration dates can also put you in danger of becoming ill/sick.

Flour

To avoid flour spoilage  Whole-wheat and Nut based flours should not be bought in bulk.

Whole-wheat flour has a shelf life between two to three months, some Nut based flours are susceptible to going off and need to be stored in the fridge or freezer.

Nuts & Seeds

Keeping your cupboards stocked with seeds is a smart thing to do, as they’re Di Nutritious!

Just be careful not to go overboard. They’re prone to going off just like flour.

Instead, only buy what you’re able to eat within 90 days (Three months).. if you’re looking for longer, then 273 days (9 months) would be the max.

THAT’S IT!

I really enjoyed sharing this with you guys. Please do let me know though…
