The big question of βwhenβ (itβs a very common question) should I eat before or after working out?
As a whole, itβs asked by those that exercise first thing in the morning.
Some say before and others say after but which is correct and which is false?
Today I will break it all down for you, and then we can get past this old question once and for all!
What Type Of Workout Are You Actually Doing?
This has to come first. For example, you might be able to Walk for an hour/ Yoga session without Β feeling hungry, but youβre more than likely not going to run 10 miles on an empty stomach without filling up your tank beforehand.
Exercising On An Empty Stomach
I know well, this will appeal to most of you Di1βs that have weight loss goals. Like I Β said before, so long as your workout is low to medium in terms of intensity it should be fine.
You must be aware though, to check for signs that your body is not feeling great, because of the fact you didnβt eat beforehand.
Lightheadedness or dizziness for example, can occur very soon after you begin and are signs that your body needs fuel, and is finding it difficult to do without having these symptoms.
Exercising On A Full Stomach
If youβre going to do a more rigorous exercise then you must eat protein and carbs beforehand, as feeling lightheaded and dizzy is the last thing youβll want to happen whilst doing a more difficult workout.
So youβve eaten, then what? I would suggest you give your body enough time to digest properly before working out.
For example itβs well known that endurance workouts such as running, on undigested food in the stomach can lead to gassy tummy issues, which is a bad idea with no toilets around.
Both Before & After
After a workout, whether you decided to eat before or after make sure you replace lost fluids with water and eat plenty of protein and carbs to make sure your muscles are getting an adequate recovery and repair session.
What Works For You Is Best
Everyone is different and itβs really up to you to do the work and find out what works best with you!
Experiment with different pre and post workout foods to find out what your body responds to best.
Of course heed my words about the pros and cons of both depending on what type of exercise youβre doing, but just realize, your personal preference via what works for you should play the biggest role in your deciding.
