Is Pasta Healthy Or Nah?

Pasta dishes are very popular worldwide and are well known for being high in carbs, when eaten in spades.

Pasta also has Gluten in it and this protein causes all kinds of trouble for those who cannot stomach Gluten due to being Gluten-sensitive.

The plus side though, is pasta can provide nutrients that we need for our health.

Now we’ll look and decided whether or not pasta is truly healthy or nah.

What Is Pasta?

Pasta is just a type of Noodle and history shows that it was always traditionally made from Wheat called “Durum” and Eggs or Water. From there you can make many types of noodle shapes and then put it in boiling hot water to cook.

Mostly now though, the Pasta products are made from just ordinary wheat. Similar noodles are made from different types of grains.. you may of heard of them,  Rice, Barely & Buckwheat.

Depending on the type of Pasta being made some are refined during processing, which means stripping away many of the nutrients (Wheat Kernel to be specific) that are in it naturally.

Here are some of the most consumed types of Pastas we all eat below..

   Spaghetti

   Macaroni

Penne

   Ravioli

   Tortellini

The toppings that are common on all of these Pastas are Meats, Sauce, Herbs, Cheese & Vegetables.

Refined Pasta Is The Most Popular

The most popular Pasta that is eaten by the majority is refined Pasta, that means the Wheat kernel has been stripped of its nutrients as I said above; so it’s bran but also wheat germ AKA Germ too.

Refined pasta then has a higher calorie than its counterpart, Whole grain Pasta and is lower in fibre than the Whole grain version.  This means energy decrease and not feeling as full as you should after eating (Click Here) whereas Whole grain Pasta will keep you fuller for longer.

Refined Pasta vs Whole Grain Pasta

Whole grain Pasta is high in fibre, selenium, copper, and phosphorus. Refined Pasta tends to be higher in Iron and B vitamins.

Fibre moves through the gastrointestinal (AKA Gut) tract undigested and  helps us with feeling full. So for this reason whole grain pasta is more effective than refined pasta in decreasing appetite and cravings.

Also, is the better option all around if you’re going to eat one or the other. But more important than which Pasta you decide to eat, you should focus on healthier toppings because despite what you’ve heard this is where weight gain happens, on your choice of toppings rather than the type of pasta itself.

How To Make My Pasta Healthier

I see no reason for Pasta to be unhealthy as this dish offers many ways to include Vegetables without even trying!

To be frank if your dish doesn’t have any, you’ve done that on purpose and are not as smart as you may think… just an idiot. Moving on…

Like I said above the topping is factor on whether or not the pasta is healthy or not!

Adding toppings that are high in fat like cream based sauces and a whole block of cheese in one sitting is the way to increase your weight not lower it.

You should be using Olive oil or Extra Virgin oil, if you’re going to be using any oils. Leave the other oils alone.. your heart will thank you for it.

Of course fresh vegetables and herbs on top instead of the cream and block of cheese is the way to go.

Meats; you can include Chicken or fish which is an extra portion of protein to keep you fuller for longer. The fibre factor; you can add Peppers & Tomatoes.

So Is Pasta Healthy Or Nah?

I no longer think that’s even the question anymore, it’s more a case of, are you healthy or nah?

I’m sure it’s yes, so you’ll include the above to your Pastas from now on and if it is a no, then you’ll most likely continue putting unhealthy toppings and destroying your health.

But to suggest that Pasta itself is unhealthy is simply unjust and because people have been adding toppings on the pasta does not = the pasta is unhealthy as most would like you to believe.

THAT’S IT!

I really enjoyed sharing this with you guys.  Please do let me know though…

I’m a huge pasta fan and I’ve go to say I’ve notice that I felt rather tired after eating it many times over. I always put it down to my sleeping habits or work, but this makes sense because I would eat other foods and have the same sleep and feel better.

As Italian I know this is the truth but I’m stubborn about refined pasta as I’ve grown up on it! This has given me something to think about anyway.
