7 Foods That Are High In Iron

We need Iron in our bodies because it’s main job is to carry oxygen throughout our bodies as part of the red blood cells.

 

This essential nutrient you get from eating food.

 

Now how much Iron stays in your body will depend on how much you have stored in the first place, a lack of Iron creates deficiencies.

 

For example Anemia which makes you feel really tired.

 

So now it’s about that time that I share with you 8 foods that are high in Iron and I suggested you start eating right away.

 

Shellfish

Shellfish is is high in Iron, with Oysters and Mussels being really good sources.

 

Now a lot of you that are into seafood will say well what about Clams?

 

I hear you but you must understand that Clams is not really reliable because it’s Iron content is not consistent sometimes high & sometimes lower  than your Daily Value (AKA DV) .

 

Shellfish is high in nutrients and is known to increase the level of HDL Cholesterol in your blood (That’s the good Cholesterol by the way!) .

 

Spinach

Spinach more than enough Iron to get you started during the day.

 

It’s also rich in Vitamin C and what that does is boots your Iron absorption, so a very good combo to have.

 

Spinach is very rich in Antioxidants some of which help reduce Cancer and decrease inflammations.

 

Eating spinach often and other leafy greens with good fat (AKA HDL) helps your body absorb the carotenoids, this is one of the Antioxidants example below..

 

You could add Olives & Olive Oil along with the Spinach, as the Olives and the Olive Oil are healthy fats.

 

Legumes

Legumes are packed with nutrients with a great source of Iron.

This is great news for vegetarians because there is no reason to be taking supplements to get your Iron up.

 

The type of Legumes are below..

Beans

Lentils

Chickpeas

Soybeans

Black Beans

Kidney beans

There are of course more but I’m running with these. 

 

All of these ones above are packed with Iron have a good source of Folate, Potassium & Magnesium.

 

Beans such as black beans, navy beans, and kidney beans can all help easily bump up your iron intake.

 

Quinoa

Quinoa is a very popular Pseudo cereal but of course it’s a grain.

 

Quinoa is great for those of you who cannot/do not eat Gluten!

 

Quinoa is also higher in protein than many other grains, as well as rich Folate, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese etc.

 

All in all this is one of the best ones you can eat, plus it taste so good.

 

Turkey

Turkey doesn’t always have to be eaten at Christmas, It can be eaten at any time of year.

 

It has a great source of Iron, especially in dark Turkey meat.

 

I would recommend this over the white Turkey any day of the week!

 

Consuming high protein foods like Turkey help with weight loss since protein makes you feel fuller for longer.

 

High protein intake can also help prevent any muscle loss that occurs during weight loss and of course is a part of the aging process. 

 

Tofu

Tofu is a soy based food that is great for vegetarians to eat which is a great source of iron too.

 

Tofu also has several minerals like Magnesium, Selenium and Calcium.

 

Tofu helps with decreasing the risk of Heart disease.

 

Fish

Fish is another source that is high in Iron.

 

For example Tuna would be  a good one for you to have.

 

Canned Tuna contains about 1.1 to 1.4 mg of Iron, which is good for our Iron intake.

 

Fish also contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are a type of heart-healthy fat with a host of health benefits.

 

Fish contains nutrients such as Niacin, Selenium plus Vitamin B-12.

 

Some other types of fish other than Tuna below..

Mackerel

Sardines

Haddock
